Hanxin Series: The History of Interaction between India and Islamic Civilizations

Oneworld Hanxin College's May "Hanxin Lecture Series" has invited Tang Ah Chai to lecture on "A Millennial Intersection of Islamic and India Civilization."

Tang graduated from the Department of History at National Taiwan University and is currently the CEO of the Action Group. He has long been involved in grassroots historical and cultural work, cultural heritage preservation, and inter-ethnic and intercultural exchange. He also holds positions in several organizations, including a member of the Majlis Warisan Kebangsaan, and chairman of the Persatuan Sahabat Warisan Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor.

This course series consists of two lectures: "The Rise of the Delhi Sultanate and the Beginning of the Islamization of India" and "The Glory of the Mughal Dynasty". The course content will guide participants to a deep understanding of the centuries-long interaction and integration between the Islamic world and the Indian subcontinent.

Historically, Islamic conquest of India began in 712 AD with the Umayyad Caliphate's conquest of Sindh (present-day southern Pakistan), a localized occupation. Large-scale Islamic rule truly began in the 13th century when Turkic peoples from Afghanistan established an Islamic state in 1206, known as the Delhi Sultanate. After more than three centuries of rule, Babur, a descendant of Genghis Khan, migrated south to India, replacing the Delhi Sultanate and establishing the Mughal Empire. This empire gradually declined in the 18th century and came under the control of the British East India Company.

Through this course series, participants will not only grasp key historical events and regime changes but also understand the processes of collision, adaptation, and integration between different religions and cultures from a broader civilizational perspective, further reflecting on the foundations of contemporary pluralistic societies.

The classes will be held on May 14th and 15th, from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, online via Google Meet. The course has a registration fee of RM40 per person, with a minimum of 15 participants. All interested individuals are welcome to register. For any inquiries, please contact Oneworld Hanxin College via WhatsApp at 018-9670599 or email pria@hanxin.edu.my.
