2026 Data Storytelling Workshop
In an era where data drives decision-making, content, and communication, the ability to transform cold data into persuasive stories has become an indispensable key capability across all fields. Oneworld Hanxin College, in collaboration with Newsgraphy, Malaysia's first Chinese data content platform, will host the "Essential Skills for 2026: Data Storytelling" workshop on March 14, 2026 (Saturday) to help participants systematically master data storytelling and visualization methods. The workshop will run from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, combining theoretical explanations with practical exercises. It is suitable for media professionals, content creators, public relations personnel, educators, students, and anyone who needs to communicate and express themselves using data.
This course will begin with "The Foundations of Data Narrative," guiding participants to understand that data is not merely numbers, but also the material for stories. It will then analyze the complete workflow "From Data to Story," including how to find reliable data sources and how to conceive themes and narrative perspectives. In the "Data Visualization Principles and Tools" unit, the instructor will share the application logic of different chart types and demonstrate practical tools to truly "speak" for the data. Finally, participants will engage in hands-on exercises using real data, creating impactful data content from scratch.
This workshop will be led by Dexter Chan, founder of Newsgraphy. A graduate of the Department of Communication at Universiti Sains Malaysia, he previously worked as a journalist. In 2022, Chan was selected for the fifth cohort of the Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators Program (EJCP) at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York (CUNY), becoming one of the 35 journalists selected globally. Over the years, he has received numerous newsroom and international awards for his outstanding performance in journalism, including the Overseas Chinese Media Reporting Award.
The workshop fee is RM200 per person. Members of the Newsgraphy can enjoy a discounted price of RM180 (limited to members who register before December 31, 2025). A package deal of RM300 (for two people) is also available, including lunch and an e-certificate. To ensure the best learning experience, the course is limited to 30 participants.
